fish dragger netreel

A fish dragger rides out a blustery December day tied to the dock in Nantucket. The motor vessel Great Point can be seen in the background. The large drum on the back of the dragger is called the netreel. The otter trawl (dragger net) is wound up on the netreel so the crew can unload the codend (the rear of the net where the catch is). The codend or “bag” as it is called is then raised above the deck with the cargo winch (seen here with the block and hook on it). Once raised, the codend is then released and the catch spills out on the deck where it is culled out.
