Here is a freshly dug coyote den just feet away from Bass River on what is now known as the Indian Lands. Now that’s a Cape Cod coyote that knows where to build a waterfront home. Which was, for the record, a southern exposure. You can see the water of a small cove in the background.
Coyotes move an impressive amount of dirt when digging a den. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but that mound of dirt is like 6 feet high! The entrance hole measures about 18 inches across. The coyotes are getting ready to have their pups and will have multiple denning sites in case one is compromised.

What a wonderful photo of the coyotes’ new den. Often I have hoped to run across one while out walking, simply to see what one looks like… now I know, thank you! Here in Marstons Mills, I often hear them howling at night when they gather. So many people are upset because they think that coyotes residing here on the Cape is an unnatural occurrence. Far from it! Actually, wolves once occupied New England, and when they were forced out by the proliferation of human activity, the coyotes have moved in behind them, taking their place. The difference is that wolves have a great fear of people… coyotes are quite adaptable, even opportunistic, around us. Thanks for sharing your photo!
Posted by Roberta from Cape Cod, MA on 07/20 at 08:38 PMJust saw a coyote carrying a rabbit in its jaws…thought it was a fox, but tan/mottled fur and canine loping gate gave it away….coyotes in Allentown!
Posted by iceaxdave from Allentown, PA on 05/22 at 07:36 AMSaw a baby fox while playing golf last week. black and grey near edge of woods. did not seem afraid-momma not seen, may have ben close. saw a small black bear again on a golf course a few years back. Captured a few weeks latr had tags from PA. had to swim the hudson River at some point to get to CT. The coyote den is smaller then I thought it would be. would have guesed it from another animal if I ran across it.
Posted by Don mackay from Orange, CT on 06/24 at 02:35 PMWe have a huge population of coyotes here and the roam the gold course next door every night. One of them killed a neighbor’s cat and the evidence was all over the parking lot.
We cannot walk our dog without watching for them and God help any pet that gets lose- they are a serious threat to people and pets.
I saw one of them last night carrying a stray cat in it’s mouth-
Not good.
What can we do to deter them? Our Apt manager won’t do anything about it. We’re scared we might be cornered one night while walking our dog.

You have no reason to fear a coyote. They will not attack you. Even if you ran accross the entire pack, they would not attack you.
