Learn more about Cape Cod Massachusetts
Cape half house

This is a classic “Cape Cod half house”. Why is it called a half house? Because it is literally half a house. A full Cape house would have two windows on either side of the front door. A three-quarter Cape would have two windows on one side of the door and one window on the other side. A five-quarter Cape would have three windows on one side and two on the other.

Most of the Cape half-houses are usually called a “Cape Cod cottages”. In the background, on the right, you can see a more “modern” saltbox style home. The half-house was the first step or “starter home” when building a Cape Cod house. The half-house would later be expanded to a 3/4 Cape, full Cape or larger as the family’s needs for more space dictated.
