grist mill in brewster

The grist mill in Brewster off Stony Brook Road. The water wheel was used many years ago to grind grain. This is a really cool place to visit, especially when the herring are running in the Spring around Easter. Inside this building there is a millstone where the grain is ground.

  3. I’m writing a novel about an American Revolutionary War battle and I needed to get an idea of what a grist mill looked like since some of the scenes take place near such a mill. By the way, I went to school in Pawling and used to pass through Brewster on the train.

  4. in the forefront of this pic is a “bypass” used to divert water from the pond across the street around the wheel when the mill was not in use.when i was young (40 yrs ago)we would use the bypass shoot like a water slide to the creek below. this pic brought back fond memories…thank you
