A clammer digging quahogs or cherrystones at Barnstable Harbor just south of Sandy Neck in Barnstable , MA. Ready for the raw bar, these clams are good steamed or eaten raw with cocktail sauce. The larger ones are called “chowders” because they are too large to be eaten raw and are more apt to be steamed and eaten in a chowder or soup.

Comments: digging clams in barnstable
Where can I go clam digging? Could you please send me direction? Also, where could I go get the permit. I’m a Massachusetts resident.
ThanksPosted by Namith from MA on 08/01 at 01:03 AMI live right in the barnstable harbor area. I was wondering where exactly in the harbor is best for clamming.
Posted by John from barnstable on 08/12 at 03:22 PMThe guy in the picture was clamming out in front of the beach at the end of Millway, past the Mattakeese Wharf Restaurant. Keep in mind that the pic was taken several years ago, so I am not sure if you can still dig clams in that area or not.
Posted by Cape Cod from Cape Cod, Massachusetts on 08/12 at 05:03 PMThank you for the info. Not sure if you know the answer to this question, but say i went clamming about 10 houses in off of sunset lane. Do you think this would be a good area to go clamming? thank you
Posted by John from barnstable on 08/12 at 05:13 PMHard to say, that is the same area as where the guy in the photo was digging.
Looking at the photo again I see that the guy’s clam basket looks empty, so this area may not be a very good clamming spot at all. Good luck.
Posted by Cape Cod from Cape Cod, Massachusetts on 08/12 at 06:52 PMBy the looks of the guy’s rake, I’d say he’s digging for sotshell clams not quohaugs.
