haddock longline halibut

The commercial fishing vessel DawnT unloads it’s catch of haddock at the Chatham fish pier. A nice halibut is visible on top of the fish box. The DawnT was participating in a special haddock longline fishery in the closed area to the east of Chatham, MA. The boats are only approved to use herring and some artificial bait designated by the NMFS. Why they did not approve mackerel is a mystery to me. The goal with limiting the types of bait used was to limit the bycatch of codfish. Mackerel is the best bait I know for haddock and from what I have seen, codfish are not very fond of it.
