The Swallowtail Fad
In the days of Andrew Jackson and Commodore Hull all Cape Cod personages wore swallowtail coats to formal gatherings. You can still find specimens of this extraordinary garment hidden away in Cape attics.
The swallowtail coat was made with either two or three buttons, always worn tightly fastened. It was fashioned of dark material, with even blacker decorative braid at the cuffs.
A swallowtail fitted its wearer much tighter than his skin. The only pockets were located in the tails. Elsewhere, they would have marred the perfect fit. The tails were made poker-stiff by inserting dried sheepskin, or by starching an inter-lining.
