Fishing Spots: Bass River Bridge Rt. 28
The Bass River Bridge is one of the most well known fishing spots in the Mid-Cape area. The Bass River Bridge separates the towns of Dennis and Yarmouth on Route 28 in the South Yarmouth/West Dennis area. You can park right on the bridge (if there is a spot open).
Be sure to fish on either side of where the channel cuts under the bridge to avoid getting tangled up with boaters. For the best chance of landing your fish, fish on the downtide side of the bridge (the side of the bridge that the tide is flowing away from). That being said, there are many large Stripers known to hang out under the bridge in the shadowline, but hooking up under the bridge against the tide will result in a lost fish. The barnacles on the bridge pilings will usually cut your line quickly.
From the bridge you can catch Striped Bass, Bluefish, Fluke (summer flounder), and Winter Flounder in season. For bait, use seaworms, squid, cut bait (herring, pogies, or mackerel), or sand eels. Talk to Lee at Riverview Bait & Tackle (1273 Route 28, S. Yarmouth, MA (508) 394-1036) to find out what being caught and what the hot bait is.
As you fish from the bridge, think of how Bass River must have looked to Leif Ericson the Viking explorer who was thought to venture up this river to Follins Pond in the year 1006.
