Widow’s Walk
Widow’s walks or “captain’s walks” are found on houses by the sea, especially the sea captain’s homes of Cape Cod.
In the old days a widows walk provided a look out to sea for a woman waiting for her husband’s ship to return home. The maritime trades being what they were, the men often didn’t return and thus the name. These walks are really roof platforms enclosed by railings, from which members of the household can look out over the sea, watching the approach or departure of ships. Now-a-days they are called “roof decks”.
