Cape Cod $70,000 From 50 Cent For Summer Stars Camp

A $70,000 grant from 50 Cent and the G-Unity Foundation made it possible for 50 kids from the New York City area to attend the Summer Stars Camp for the Performing Arts here on Cape Cod. 50 Cent chose this camp because it provides deserving youth with an opportunity to explore and develop their creative abilities. The camp offers small group programs in improvisational acting, blues performance, dance, musical theater/choral singing, set design, juggling, drumming and music video production.

The Summer Stars Camp for the Performing Arts, was started and formerly funded by pop-star Britney Spears. Spears created the camp on Cape Cod seven years ago to help disadvantaged youths from Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., realize their star power. The camp was started by Donna Milani Luther of Norwell with a $200,000 from the Britney Spears Foundation. In January of 2005 the pop star announced she would commit a large portion of her camp funding to cancer-related charities leaving the camp to find other backers.

Although Spears asked Luther to start the camp, the foundation announced that it was redirecting Spears’ charitable giving to another cause: programs for children with cancer. But Spears changed her mind. The Britney Spears Foundation will still provide most of the camp’s funding, although the amount has been cut by more than half. This summer camp’s budget was about $75,000 this summer. Rap star Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson stepped up to the plate with a $70,000 grant to send 50 inner-city kids to the camp.

With a $70,000 grant, the G-Unity Foundation has made possible for 50 kids from the Jamaica, Queens and surrounding areas, to attend the Summer Stars Camp for the Performing Arts on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Camp provides deserving youth, ages 12 – 16, an intensive experience in the performing arts. This experience provides campers the opportunity to explore and develop their talents. The Camp offers small group programs in improvisational acting, blues performance, dance, musical theater/choral singing, set design, juggling, drumming, and music video production. Through our work together, campers build a level of cooperation and respect that develops a real community atmosphere.

Students selected for the camp will be sponsored by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and The G-Unity Foundation, Inc., and will attend under the newly formed Charles A. Pringle, Jr. Leadership Academy. This new and important aspect to our program was created in honor of a dear friend of Curtis’, who lived by these three powerful words: Decisions Determine Destination. These students will not only have a tremendous experience with the performing arts, but will learn how to embody these three words in their own lives.
