1,000,000 Years Ago
Geologists tell us that microscopic examination of the famous clays of Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard show evidence of animals that lived 1,000,000 years ago.
The clays which are carried off by tourists in small quantities, — not to mention the ravages of the sea, which washes them off in great volume — show casts of shells and crabs, fossil barnacles, sharks’ teeth (from sharks estimated to have been nearly 100 feet long), and bones of whales, rhinoceroses, and other animals dating back to the tertiary age—an estimated 1,000,000 years ago.
