Great Wreck Off Nantucket 1909
Almost a century ago this winter, the famous White Star Steamship Company’s ocean liner Republic was rammed and sent to the bottom by the Italian steamship Florida, off the Island of Nantucket.
The date was January 23, 1909. This disaster was notable for being the first one involving the use of a radio in a sea rescue. The Republic’s wireless operator, Jack Binns, came in to sudden fame by sending the signal “CDQ,” again and again, which was finally heard in time. CDQ was the signal used before our familiar “SOS” came into use. Rescue came to the scene in time to effect saving all but six of the people aboard the Republic.
