Hard Workers
Don’t get the idea that those who lived in the early days on Cape Cod were all farmers and fishermen. There were others.
They were men of enterprise and ambition who saw opportunity in industry and commerce. The first fishing vessels were built either by the owner alone or as a cooperative venture but as the need for larger ships grew, the home building of sailing vessels did not fill the need.
Barnstable men built ships. The first known professional builder was Thomas Agrey of Barnstable. He went into the business in 1750 and did very well at it. The Shiverick’s of Dennis were also great builders of ships.
