Sturdy Cape Codders
At one time during the Revolution, a fleet of British ships cruised through the waters of the Cape looking for a profitable raid. The first attack was at New Bedford.
They burned part of the city, but found that the whalemen were more than they could handle. Consequently, they decided that Falmouth should be their next target. The redcoats bombarded and tried to take the town, but here again they were driven off.
Reluctantly, the British decided that they might as well give the whole thing up; and sailed away, hoping that the next place they raided would not be inhabited by men of the same caliber as the sturdy Cape Codders.
