That Fabulous Sandwich Glass
Unbelievably beautiful were the creations which the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory turned out in the nineteenth century. The opulence of the period was reflected in the intricate, shining shapes which made the name of Sandwich glass famous both in the United States and abroad.
The gaffers, as the glass blowers were called, made lovely pieces for themselves, their wives, and their sweethearts during periods when business was slow or after hours. Some of the most beautiful and unusual pieces of Sandwich glass were made then, elaborately etched, richly colored, or silvered.
Actually, Sandwich glass was manufactured largely to suit the pocketbooks of the middle and poorer classes. For instance, cups and plates sold for under twenty cents, and glass animals for only a few cents. Goblets, glasses, decanters, perfume bottles, fantastic pitchers, baskets and cosmetic jars, were among the pieces turned out by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company for the low-income pocketbook during more than half a century of operation.
