The Sea Around Us
The familiar title of Rachel Carson’s book, The Sea Around Us, aptly describes the Cape Codder’s situation. For Cape Cod, once a peninsula and now (because of the Canal) an island, is literally surrounded by the sea.
To the north there is Cape Cod Bay and Massachusetts Bay; to the east the vast Atlantic surges stretch to the Old World; to the south lies Buzzards Bay, and Nantucket Sound; and all these areas of Old Ocean are linked by means of the Cape Cod Canal.
