Whale Carries Harpoon 20 Years
Starbuck, in his History of the American Whale Fishery, carries a note from the New Bedford Shipping List which says that Captain Hamblen, of the bark Andrew Hicks, from Westport, Massachusetts, captured a cachalot (a type of whale) in the year 1871.
Attached to the whale was a harpoon belonging to the whaler Catawba of Nantucket. The harpoon had been carried about in the whale’s side for twenty years. This was the second time when this same Captain Hamblen recovered a lost harpoon from another whaler.
