John Alden Settles the Matter
The Pilgrims and the Indians got along very well. There were a few arguments but none was serious. In 1657 the inhabitants of the Town of Yarmouth had a disagreement with the Indian sachem Yanno, or Janno, about the ownership of some land.
John Alden and Lieutenant Southworth were appointed to judge the matter. They decided that the Town owned the land. To clear the matter the Town of Yarmouth was told to pay the sachem six coats, six pair small breeches, ten hoes, ten hatchets, two brass kettles and one iron keetle.
